KEY POINTS:
A man died instantly when his car ploughed through road works barriers and into a ditch.
Senior Sergeant Malcolm Lochrie said the accident happened at 9pm last night on Willowbank Avenue south of Napier.
A driver travelling south drove through road works into a large hole which had been excavated to put in a culvert, Mr Lochrie said.
"(Road workers) put cones and barriers around the hole but it's night time and the driver hasn't seen it.
"He's gone straight through the markers, travelled over the hole, struck the other side and then rolled back into the hole upside down."
The driver, a 37-year-old Napier man, died on impact.
Mr Lochrie said the serious crash unit attended the scene of the accident, and was still investigating whether alcohol or fatigue were factors in the crash.
He said the road works were well-marked and obvious.
