KEY POINTS:
A motorist killed when his car crashed into a house in the Auckland suburb of New Lynn early today probably fell asleep, police say.
No one in the house was hurt when the car careered off Astley Avenue, and ploughed into the property about 5.30am.
Firefighters were called to extricate the driver who was believed to have died at the scene or shortly after.
Senior Constable Garry Abbott of the police serious crash unit said witnesses saw the man exceeding the speed limit moments before the crash.
"To me, looking at the evidence, he's fallen asleep behind the wheel and just sailed in a straight line through the property."
He said the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
