Man critically injured while walking home

Police are investigating how a man sustained a life-threatening injury while walking home from a family gathering in Otahuhu.

Police said the 54-year-old man was socialising at a relative's home on Princes Street, Otahuhu and left the address on foot around midnight.

He was found unconscious on the footpath outside 4 Church Street, Otahuhu by police around 3am this morning.

Police believe he was walking home, which is approximately one kilometre from where he had been socialising earlier with family.

Police said the man was in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital.

He is described as a male Maori, 180 cm tall and of medium build. He was last seen wearing a pink and blue striped long-sleeved shirt, khaki pants and sneakers.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen anyone fitting this description in the Otahuhu and Church Street area between midnight and 3:30am.
