Man critically injured after assault on Auckland's Queen St

A man is in a critical condition after an assault on Queen St, in central Auckland, early this morning.

The assault happened around 4.20am.

Police said inquiries were underway to locate the offender.

There was no sign of the early-morning incident on Queen St around 8.30am.

A Burger King employee told the Herald there were several police officers around the bottom of Queen St when she arrived at work, around 6am.

Part of the road had been closed, she said.

Queen St was closed between Wyndham St and Shortland St while police examined the scene.

The cordons have since been removed.
