A critically ill man fought for his life in Auckland Hospital today as police tried to find out why he was so badly beaten.
The 22-year-old man received multiple injuries in a fight between at least two groups in the west Auckland suburb of Henderson about 1am today.
A woman was also taken to hospital but her injuries were not life-threatening.
"Police have recovered a number of weapons from the scene and three vehicles have been taken for examination to try and establish how the fight erupted," said Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton from the Waitakere police.
"The man has received a severe beating with multiple injuries and I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed what happened and has not been interviewed to contact the Henderson police," Mr Sutton said.
Police were knocking on doors in Rathgar Road, and other streets where the fight broke out but Mr Sutton said it was important police heard from witnesses who may have seen what happened.
No one had been arrested, said police.
