A man was taken to hospital in a critical condition after a fight on Auckland's Jervois Road last night.
A spokeswoman from St John Ambulance said the man was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition at about 6.30pm.
One nzherald.co.nz reader said the man had blood coming out of his ears.
Acting police inspector Danny Meade last night said the 55 year-old man "cracked his head" when punched to the ground by another man.
Police were last night interviewing the other man, witnesses and nearby residents.
A spokesman for the Auckland District Health Board said the man was in a serious but stable condition in Auckland Hospital's critical care ward.
Cordons were still up at the scene this morning.
