KEY POINTS:
A man is in critical condition after a high-speed police chase in the central North Island yesterday.
The man was pursued along the Desert Road to Turangi after a police officer saw him speeding in a car which had been reported as stolen. The chase finished in Turangi, where police staff had deployed road spikes.
The man swerved to avoid the spikes but lost control and crashed into trees. The Police Complaints Authority is investigating.
