A Whangarei man was taken to hospital after crashing into a power pole shortly after police abandoned a pursuit of his car. Police Acting Sergeant Ken Andrews said police were waiting to speak to the man before deciding what charges to lay after the crash on Kamo Rd yesterday.
He said a police patrol spotted a car breaking the 50km/h speed limit on Kiripaka Rd, Tikipunga, about midnight.
The patrol had tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver sped off, with police in pursuit along Mill Rd, Nixon St and on to Kamo Rd.
The driver had allegedly driven through several red lights and overtaken vehicles on the wrong side of the road.
Mr Andrews said the patrol had abandoned the pursuit due to the high speed of the fleeing car.
