KEY POINTS:
A man appeared in Tokoroa District Court today, charged with the murder of a toddler who died in hospital last year after being severely scalded.
The arrest of the 30-year-old man came after an extensive nine-month investigation into the death of 22-month-old Tyla-Maree Darryl Flynn.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper said the toddler was rushed to Tokoroa Hospital by her mother on June 29 suffering from severe burns to her head and upper body.
The child suffered the burns, believed to be caused by hot water, about 5pm on Thursday, June 28. She was admitted to Tokoroa Hospital about 9.50am on June 29, and died about an hour later in front of relatives.
The accused man made no plea in court and was remanded in custody to reappear on April 21 in Rotorua District Court.
His name was suppressed until April 10 when further application for suppression will be argued if necessary.
