KEY POINTS:
A Rotorua salesman charged with abducting and sexually violating a 13-year-old girl in Auckland has been granted interim name suppression.
The man, who is in his 50s, appeared in Rotorua District Court today.
He has not entered pleas to charges of kidnapping the girl to have sexual intercourse with her on June 30 at Glen Eden, in West Auckland.
He has also not pleaded to a charge of assaulting the girl with intent to sexually violate her and a charge of sexually violating her.
The man's lawyer Peter Birks asked for name suppression to give the man the chance to tell his family about the charges he faces.
Judge James O'Donovan remanded the man in custody to appear again on July 30.
Judge O'Donovan said he would grant the man interim name suppression but told him that it was unlikely to continue after his next court appearance.
Detectives yesterday arrested the man in Rotorua, where he was living.
The Herald understands a tip-off from the public led police to the man.
The girl was walking along West Coast Rd in Glen Eden on her way to visit a friend when she was lured into a car.
She was sexually and physically abused during her 45-minute ordeal in West Auckland.
The man had allegedly asked the teenager for directions, then insisted she get into his car to show him the way.
Detective Sergeant Megan Goldie, from the Waitakere police child abuse team, said several inquiries had yet to be completed.
However, she said, yesterday's arrest was "a significant development".
"Police particularly acknowledge the many members of the public who gave us information after the abduction," Ms Goldie said.
