Man charged with raping tourist

A 28-year-old man was due to appear in Nelson District Court this morning charged with the rape of a woman visiting the city.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney said the victim had been sexually assaulted in a park by the alleged offender, whom she met in a city bar.

An exact time of the attack was not known but had occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, he said.

The woman, a tourist, was still very traumatised but was being supported by her travelling companions and the Nelson victim support group, he said.
