KEY POINTS:
A 28-year-old Wellington man has been charged with two counts of racing a vehicle causing death in connection with a crash which killed a mother and baby.
Sharon Alexandra Tawhara, 23, and her infant son Nathan died in the crash on State Highway 5 at Waipa, about 3km south of Rotorua on December 30.
Senior Sergeant Ed Van Den Broek of Rotorua police said the man would also face a charge of operating a motor vehicle in a race and causing injury.
The man is to appear in the Rotorua District Court at a date yet to be determined.
Mr Van Den Broek said at the time the car Ms Tawhara was driving spun out of control after hitting another car it was trying to overtake, swerving to the right and hitting a roadside tree.
