KEY POINTS:
An 18-year-old man has been arrested for a spate of arsons in suburban Wellington over the last four months.
The alleged firebug was charged with nine counts of arson in Wellington District Court today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell, from the Wellington CIB, said police visited the man at his home. He lived in the area where the fires had been set.
They then took him to the police station, where he was interviewed and arrested.
He had allegedly tried to burn down the Miramar South School several times, as well as setting fire to a number of cars near the school.
The first fire was lit in January, the most recent last Friday.
Police found the man through watching CCTV tapes, comparing the characteristics of the fires and going door-to-door in the houses bounded by Miro Street, Kedah Street and Kauri Street, Mr Borrell said.
