A 49-year-old man, charged with assault after a woman was found dead in Balclutha earlier this month, is now charged with murdering the woman.
When the man made his second appearance on the matter in the Dunedin District Court today, the assault charge was withdrawn.
On a newly-laid charge alleging he murdered the woman at Balclutha on October 3, the man was remanded in custody by consent to November 30 for further psychiatric assessment.
In light of a report prepared under the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act, Judge Michael Crosbie granted continued interim suppression of the man's name.
