A 19-year-old Dunedin man has had a charge of manslaughter laid against him for his role in a fatal accident at the intersection of Hope and Stafford Sts almost six months ago.
Shay Robert Richards, who appeared in the Dunedin District Court this afternoon, faces a total of five charges, the most serious being an allegation he caused the death of Nakita May Strange by an unlawful act, namely the reckless operation of a motor vehicle in Dunedin on July 29 last year.
The other charges allege Richards, the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal accident, failed to render assistance to the person killed, caused injury to three people -- Liam James Boniface, Devin George Sparrow and Xavier Kostas Sardiello -- by driving recklessly and stole $75.54 of petrol from BP Service Station, Cumberland St, also on July 29.
Police did not oppose bail and Judge Kevin Phillips remanded Richards without plea to appear in the High Court on February 9.
During the remand Richards is not allowed to contact any member of the deceased's family or any of the other named victims and he is not allowed to drive.
