A man charged with an assault which left Trevor Kaukau bleeding and unconscious in Auckland's Karangahape Rd early on Saturday morning has been granted bail.
The 20-year-old part-time storeman from Otahuhu was arrested this morning and charged with one count of assault.
A hospital spokesman said Mr Kaukau, 40, was in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital having had more surgery last night to remove parts of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.
Judge David Wilson granted interim name suppression when the accused appeared in Auckland District Court today, giving him time to inform his family and employer of the allegations before his name and image appeared in the media.
Bail was not opposed by the prosecution and he was remanded to appear in court again on Monday, when the name suppression order also expires.
Mr Kaukau was put into a drug induced coma after he was found unconscious on Karangahape Rd near Pitt Street about 5.45am on Saturday.
Doctors have told his family he will never be the same if he survives the attack.
