A Wanganui man has been remanded in custody on charges of inflicting serious injuries on his 11-month-old grandson.
The man, 45, who has name suppression appeared in Palmerston North District Court yesterday afternoon accused of wounding the baby with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and failing to provide him with the necessities of life, the Dominion Post has reported.
Police said the baby, from Palmerston North, appeared to have been injured at a house in the coastal Taranaki town of Opunake. on May 1
Several days later, he was diagnosed at a Palmerston North medical clinic with a fractured leg and referred to Palmerston North Hospital, where more injuries were discovered and he was immediately transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland.
The boy was no longer in hospital, but needed ongoing medical treatment and was staying with a caregiver.
