An unemployed 19-year-old man is due to appear in court tomorrow charged over an assault that left a police officer needing hospital treatment.
Northland police said the man was arrested today and would appear in Whangarei District Court facing a count of wounding with intent to injure.
The alleged assault happened in Whangarei in the early hours of March 21.
Senior Sergeant Rob Huys said that, during an incident involving serious disorder, the officer received serious head injuries after being struck on the head with a rock.
The officer was taken to hospital, but was later discharged and was recovering at home.
He still had distorted vision, but the condition was not expected to be permanent.
Mr Huys said police had received help in their inquiries from members of the public who were at the scene on the night.
