A 25-year-old man will appear in Hamilton District Court today charged with attacking a police officer in the Waikato township of Ngaruawahia on Wednesday night.
The officer was attacked after going to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted by a man in Newton Street about 9pm.
He spoke briefly to a man before he was apparently hit and fell to the ground, banging his head on the kerb and being knocked unconscious.
A bystander raised the alarm by using the radio in the police officer's car.
He was treated for his injuries and is now recuperating at home.
Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson, of Huntly police, said today a man had been charged with aggravated wounding of the officer, male assaults female, and breach of a protection order.
Mr Simpson said police were grateful for the help they had received from the public which had allowed them to make a quick arrest.
Last night's attack was the second such incident in the town in the past month.
