Police have charged a man with assault after the death of a 26-year-old father of two yesterday afternoon.
The man was left critically hurt with head injuries and on life support in Wellington Hospital after being attacked in Upper Hutt early on Sunday morning.
The man had left a bar and was walking along Main St around 1am when he was set upon.
Life support was turned off in the early afternoon and the man died at 4.10pm, with family present.
The man accused of assaulting the victim will appear in Upper Hutt District Court today.
Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said police would consider further charges depending on the results of a post-mortem examination.
Police said they expected to release the name of the victim later today once all next of kin had been notified.
Mr Thomson appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
