KEY POINTS:
A man has been arrested and charged with assault in relation to the death of a 60 year-old man in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill.
The 30 year-old will appear in the Auckland District Court today.
Police launched a homicide investigation yesterday but were saying little about the death last night, confirming only that a 60-year-old man was dead after a domestic dispute.
Officers were called to the Richardson Rd home in Mt Roskill shortly before 7am.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he was preparing to walk his dog when he heard a woman crying in the street.
"She was obviously distressed," he said.
The man emerged from his home to see what was wrong and found the woman being comforted by a neighbour as four police cars arrived.
"The neighbour was just checking to see if she was all right," he said. "She obviously wasn't."
A St John Ambulance spokesman said that one person at the home was taken to Auckland City Hospital for treatment.
Police emergency tape stretched from the home along eight properties.
The neighbour said a man and woman and two others believed to be their sons lived in the home.
One son was about 14, the other in his late 20s. The man said he knew the family to talk to but did not know their names.
He had been told the father had been killed and said he was shocked by the news.
"They're pretty nice people. They never cause any grief ... they go to church every Sunday."
Shocked residents living within the cordoned-off area said they were under temporary lockdown while police investigated.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty would not comment on the injuries of the man in hospital.
A postmortem examination on the 60-year-old's body would be conducted today.
Meanwhile, police investigating the death of a woman early yesterday said her death was not suspicious.
Emergency services were called to View Rd, Mt Eden, by someone who reported a person lying on the road on fire.
The fire was put out but the woman died in the street before St John ambulance officers arrived.
