In the incident on June 3, a 36-year-old man was walking through Forum North carpark at about 9pm when he was assaulted by four men who demanded money from him.
The victim stumbled to the Whangarei Women's Club in Rust Avenue where club members called police and an ambulance.
A 19-year-old man appeared in court on Monday and admitted a charge of aggravated assault. He was remanded in custody to appear for sentencing on July 7.
