A man has appeared in court charged with driving while disqualified in relation to a crash in Christchurch which left two people dead.
Phillip Bruce Bannan, 22, was granted a registrar's remand, meaning he did not appear before the judge at this morning's hearing at the Christchurch District Court.
He was remanded on bail until September 13.
The charge arises from an incident on Thursday night when a driver allegedly fled from a police stop and was involved in a crash at the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Gloucester Street in which Deidre Valerie Jordan, 67, and Norman Richard Fitt, 73, were killed.
More serious charges are expected to be laid.
