KEY POINTS:
A 27 year-old man has been arrested over a hit-and-run during a police chase which left a man fighting for his life.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark McHattie said the arrest was made thanks to help from the public.
Taijin Choi, who was hit on Auckland's Mayoral Drive last Tuesday, is still seriously ill in hospital but his condition is stable.
Mr Choi was crossing the road with friends at 12.30am when he was hit by a car police say was stolen.
Detective Inspector Bruce Shadbolt said last week that police were travelling at speeds over 60km an hour but he said the exact speeds are not known.
He said that the offending driver must have known he had hit someone because of the extensive damage to the car that was later found abandoned downtown.
Police stopped the chase to attend to Mr Choi who was rushed to hospital and had surgery last week. His father flew out from Korea to be at his bedside.
The arrested man will appear in the Auckland District Court today, charged with wounding the 24 year-old and traffic offences.
