Man charged over cold case granted bail

A man charged as an accessory to a cold-case murder nearly seven years ago has been granted bail this morning.

Two men appeared in Manukau District Court for the first time yesterday charged over the deaths of Mubarak Yusef, more commonly known as Pakeeza Faizal, and her daughter Juwairiyah Kalim, also known as 'Jojo', after human remains were discovered under the Takapuna overbridge.

Ms Faizal and 3-year-old Jojo were killed in late December 2006 or early 2007, at their Howick home, police believe.

A 41-year-old man who was known to both victims was charged with their murders and a 64-year man was charged with being an accessory after the fact to both murders.

The latter appeared in Manukau District Court again this morning where he was granted bail by Judge Gregory Hikaka.

The provisional conditions of bail mean the defendant - who has interim name suppression - ordered to surrender his passport.

The judge also indicated the south Auckland man would have to report to probation twice a week and would be barred from contacting his co-accused and potential witnesses.

Specific bail conditions would be finalised later today.

Ms Faizal and Jojo were not reported missing to police until last January and an investigation revealed the pair had been subject to foul play.

Human remains were found under the Takapuna Landing Bridge on Saturday, police said.

They would not reveal how the men before the court were known to the victims.

The defendants will appear in the High Court next month.
