He appeared in court this morning and was remanded on bail to reappear on August 7.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Murton believes up to eight people were involved.
"We believe the incident occurred after a number of people arrived at the address by car, and a fight developed between that group and people at the address,'' he said.
"At this stage we do not know specifically what has triggered the fight. Weapons were involved, but we are not releasing details of the types of weapons.''
Officers today were paying particular interest to broken bricks that could be seen lying on the road.
"There are indications of some history of contact between the two groups of people.''
The nature of the injuries would not be released either, Mr Murton said.
The fight is believed to have occurred predominantly on the street outside the address.
Witnesses described hearing yelling and seeing fighting from inside a house, and later a "pool of blood'' was seen on the road.
This afternoon a large police cordon surrounded the northern end of the street, with a scene examination underway both inside and outside the house.
Mr Murton said they were also looking at cars involved in dropping the wounded men off at Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department.
A police tent has been erected in the middle of the street, and investigators are trawling the large crime scene while security guards restrict entry inside the cordon.
Police say the scene examination will not be completed until late today or tomorrow.
Around a dozen police staff are continuing to work on the investigation and they are also continuing to talk to nearby residents and other witnesses.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about it to contact Christchurch police on (03) 3637400.
Alternatively, to provide information anonymously, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
