A 20-year-old man is due to appear in court today on firearms charges after an armed incident in Upper Hutt yesterday afternoon.
Armed police cordoned off streets and advised residents to stay inside after a man was seen carrying a rifle through the city around 4.45pm.
But no shots were fired and no one was injured before the man was taken into custody just before 6pm.
Inspector Mike Hill said the local man would appear in Upper Hutt District Court today to face one charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and one of unlawful possession of ammunition.
Police would oppose bail, he said.
