KEY POINTS:
A man has been charged with assault after a 37-year-old woman was found unconscious in a rural Alexandra house at the weekend.
The woman remains in an induced coma in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit and will be interviewed by police when she regains consciousness.
Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie said her head injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
Police found a 43-year-old man not far from the property on Saturday.
He was still being psychologically assessed in Dunedin today but would be charged with assault. The charge was to be laid in Dunedin District Court this morning, in the man's absence.
Mr Blackie said the pair knew each other but would not reveal the nature of their relationship.
Two children, aged seven and 10, who were at home at the time of the incident, were being cared for by next of kin. Child, Youth and Family had been contacted.
A police team of 18 were working on the inquiry, with forensic staff still carrying out a scene examination this morning.
