A man has been arrested and charged with assault after a woman's body was found in a Bay of Plenty house, police said today.
Police were called to a property at Kaingaroa, 50km southeast of Rotorua, about 10.15pm yesterday and found a 38-year-old woman in the bedroom.
Ambulance staff arrived, but they were unable to resuscitate the woman.
The house in Groome St was cordoned off and police and an Auckland forensic team were carrying out a scene examination this morning.
A port-mortem examination of the body was due to be conducted in Auckland today, with results not expected before tomorrow at the earliest.
