A 24-year-old labourer from the Tauranga suburb of Hairini is to face serious charges after a woman was hit by a four-wheel-drive allegedly speeding at a group of partygoers.
The man has been charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier told the Bay of Plenty Times further charges could be laid following a police investigation.
The woman was hit by the vehicle when the young male driver allegedly drove at speed towards a group of partygoers a number of times in a Tauranga street on Saturday night.
Witnesses said the 47-year-old woman twice evaded the vehicle as the man drove across the street, but on the third crossing she was hit and her leg was run over.
The woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital with a broken bone in her upper arm and severe bruising. The others escaped injury.
The 4WD was chased down the street by angry partygoers, the Bay of Plenty Times was told.
The driver was known to partygoers and had been at the house for a few drinks earlier in the evening.
The injured woman, who was released from hospital yesterday morning, did not want to comment about the incident.
