KEY POINTS:
A 23-year-old man has been charged after allegedly attacking his mother and threatening police with a hunting knife in Paeroa yesterday.
State Highway 26, near the intersection with Ryall Rd, was closed for about three hours as police tried to negotiate with the man to come out of a house.
Police were called to the rural address just before 4pm by a woman who had been assaulted by her emotionally disturbed son, police said.
She had received a moderate head wound and managed to escape the house.
The man armed himself with a large hunting knife and refused to speak to police.
When negotiations failed, members of the Waikato armed offenders squad fired tear gas into the house to flush him out and he was arrested, police said.
He has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and may face further charges dependent on the results of a psychiatric assessment.
The man's mother was treated at a medical centre after being hit with what police believe was an iron bar.
