A man caught over two-and-a-half times the legal drink driving limit at 9am today was probably still drunk from Christmas festivities, police say.
The 26-year-old Hamilton man was stopped in the east of the during a routine police vehicle checkpoint.
"According to the police officer involved, the driver of this vehicle wasn't showing any overly visible signs of being drunk,'' said Senior Sergeant Dave Litton.
"However after the roadside tests, this driver returned to the Hamilton police station where he subsequently blew over two-and-a-half times the legal limit.''
Mr Litton said the driver told police he had stopped drinking earlier in the morning but apparently had not given himself enough time for the alcohol to leave his system.
