An Opotiki man received serious burns to 40 per cent of his body yesterday afternoon while trying to start a fire at a farm.
The 54-year-old drove home and waited under a cold shower until an ambulance arrived.
The Tenon rescue helicopter met the ambulance and took the man to Waikato Hospital for surgery. He was in a stable, but serious condition.
