KEY POINTS:
Police in Christchurch are looking for two men involved in an unprovoked attack on a man walking through the city's Latimer Square early yesterday morning.
Detective Nicola Reeves, of Christchurch CIB, said the 22-year-old victim was walking home from work about 12.30am when he was approached by a man sitting with a group of young people in the square.
The man shook hands with him then, without warning, punched him several times about the head and face.
A second attacker joined in from behind, also punching the man several times in the back of his head.
The 22-year-old fell and was kicked in the back while on the ground as his attackers went through his pockets and demanded money.
The man's wallet, cellphone and credit cards were stolen.
Ms Reeves said the man was lucky to receive only bruises and scratches in the attack.
His attackers were described as dark-skinned and in their 20s, the first clean shaven with tattoos on his face.
Ms Reeves said it was a "nasty, unprovoked attack".
"The nights this week have been clear and cloudless with a full moon and someone living nearby or driving may have seen the people there," she said.
Police are seeking witnesses.
