KEY POINTS:
A central Hawke's Bay man is in Wellington Hospital with serious head injuries after being attacked outside his work place.
Police were called after the victim, in his 40s, staggered the 1600m to his Waipukurau home after the bashing on Thursday night.
He was found, semi-conscious, by a family member and taken to the Central Hawke's Bay Health Centre before being airlifted by rescue helicopter to Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings on Friday morning.
He was later flown to Wellington Hospital for brain scans.
Police said that a large amount of blood was found outside CHB Glass, on Takapau Road, Waipukurau, which led them to suspect the assault was committed there, but tests would be needed to confirm that.
They would be studying video surveillance over the next few days in a bid to identify the attacker.
The victim, who was well-known in Waipukurau where he had lived there all his life, was likely to be named tomorrow.
