A Hawke's Bay man who shot dead his daughter's boyfriend on a hunting trip was today sentenced to five months' home detention.
Garth John Porter, 53, self-employed, of Napier, had pleaded guilty in Napier District Court to carelessly using a firearm causing the death of Aron Timms, 18.
Judge Bridget McIntosh ordered that he also do 250 hours of community work.
A condition of home detention was that Porter undergo counselling during his sentence and for six months after.
A psychiatric report was considered by court, but not made public.
Porter and Mr Timms were hunting in the Tarawera Ranges on March 15 when Porter thought he saw a deer.
He fired, killing Mr Timms who was leaning against a cabbage tree.
Mr Timms' father has said he did not believe Porter belonged in prison.
The home detention sentence will start on August 19.
