GISBORNE - An axe-wielding man attacked Gisborne's new police station and two police cars parked nearby early this morning, causing extensive damage.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested and was expected to face criminal damage charges.
The incident was filmed by security cameras.
A large glass pane of the station's self-opening doors was destroyed and another pane shattered while the windows and pillars of two police cars parked on Gladstone Road were smashed in the 5.30 am attack.
It is alleged the man also used a wheel brace and golf club in the attack.
Senior Sergeant Maui Aben said police were not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
Police were alerted by a passerby who rang in, he said.
"They said that they had seen a person smashing the front door," he said.
Mr Aben said as a result of information from the passer by police found the man.
