A Hastings man was attacked by a number of people as he tried to stop his vehicle from being stolen yesterday afternoon.
Detective Constable Sally Patrick said that the 21-year-old victim found the man trying to take his vehicle which was parked near the Ngaruroro River, at Twyford, 7km northwest of Hastings at 3.30pm.
He was then assaulted by the offender before the arrival of two carloads of people who joined in the attack.
A bystander was also assaulted as he tried to help the victim before the offenders left - leaving the man's car behind.
Ms Patrick said police were keen to speak to the bystander, who had been in a brown vehicle, and any other witnesses to the incident.
