A man lost all his possessions and suffered severe facial injuries in a "brutal" carjacking in New Lynn, police say.
Police said the 21-year-old man was stopped at a roundabout on Clark Street in New Lynn on Wednesday night, when a man opened the driver's door, dragged him from his car and attacked him with a bottle.
The attacker, described as an 18-year-old Polynesian or Maori of medium build and 170cm tall took the car and left the scene.
The car has not been seen since.
The victim, who had only recently arrived in Auckland and had all his possessions in the car, was hospitalised overnight. He was severely bruised and needed stitches in his face.
Constable Rachel Inskeep said the crime was particularly nasty.
He said: "It is unusual in that it was carried out by a sole offender, at a time when there were no pedestrians or vehicular traffic in the area.
"The offender must have been waiting nearby knowing he would be able to seize an opportunity. Someone may have seen him in area."
Ms Inskeep said drivers need to ensure their doors are locked at all times and be aware of their surroundings at night.
Anyone who has seen the stolen car, a black Honda Integra, registration DFH132, or has any information about the offender is asked to contact police.
