The Department of Labour is investigating a Marlborough abattoir after one man was attacked by a bull, and another fell into a bull pen within the space of 24 hours.
A 50-year-old truck driver was injured when a bull attacked him as he unloaded stock from a truck at the CMP meatworks near Blenheim last night.
He was admitted to Blenheim's Wairau Hospital where he was in a stable condition today
On Monday, a 60-year-old man was found with serious head injuries in a pen at the meatworks.
He remained in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital today.
General manager Gary Lindsay told NZPA he was not sure how the man had fallen into the pen, but it was clear he had not been trampled by a bull.
He said he was unable to comment further on either incident while they were under investigation by the Department of Labour.
Marlborough CMP would also be conducting internal investigations into both incidents.
Mr Lindsay said he had been in his job for 14 months and had not heard of the company having had any incidents as serious as these.
"We're very committed to health and safety and it's very devastating for us all."
