A 20-year-old man has been arrested over stabbings in central Hamilton early yesterday, police say.
Detective Sergeant Nigel Keall, of West Hamilton CIB, said the man was arrested early this afternoon in relation to an incident that happened in the market place area near Victoria and Hood Streets between 2am and 3am.
Three people were hospitalised with knife wounds.
An 18-year-old man was admitted to Waikato Hospital's high-dependency unit with wounds to his stomach, Radio New Zealand reported.
Two other victims, a 17-year-old man who was stabbed in the back and a 21-year-old man who was stabbed four times, have been released from hospital.
Police said the man arrested is being charged for the two less serious stabbings, though more charges are likely to be laid.
"The man is in custody and is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow charged with two counts of wounding with intent," Mr Keall said.
"Our inquiries are continuing and we still want to hear from any witnesses who haven't yet been interviewed by police."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Hamilton Central Police Station.
