A man has been charged with assaulting a 17-month-old who is critically injured in Auckland's Starship Hospital.
Tinisha Walker was seriously injured at a house in the suburb of Kamo, 5km north of central Whangarei, on Tuesday.
Police said a 39-year-old man had been charged with her assault and would appear in Whangarei District Court this morning.
Officers are examining the house where Tinisha was injured and talking to family members and neighbours.
Tinisha remains in a critical condition.
Whangarei St John district operations manager Doug Gallagher said the child was taken to Whangarei Hospital by ambulance at 1.15pm on Tuesday.
She was later flown by the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter to Starship.
