KEY POINTS:
A man has been arrested over the beating of an elderly man in an Auckland supermarket carpark and a home invasion in the Bay of Plenty.
The 44 year-old man was caught by police after a car chase through central and south Auckland.
Austen Bell, 78, was in the Three Kings Foodtown carpark on Sunday when he was beaten so badly his eye socket was broken.
The attacker knocked Mr Bell unconscious and left the Foodtown in Mr Bell's car.
Inspector Ian Brooker said police have not found Mr Bell's car - a silver Nissan Primera.
A farmer from Otakiri, near Edgecumbe, got two black eyes and a broken jaw when he got up to investigate a noise early on Tuesday morning.
Two or possibly three men attacked the farmer, punching and kicking him before taking his ute.
The man now in custody was allegedly driving the ute and is due to appear in the Auckland District Court today.
Police are still on the look-out for another man who is believed to have been involved in the Edgecumbe home invasion.
