A man has been arrested on suspicion of attacking a woman and then trying to convince passers-by it was a "domestic dispute".
The incident occurred on May 22nd when the man assaulted the 33-year-old woman in a park by Hamilton's Lake Rotoroa but fled after a member of the public rang police.
This morning's arrest followed a seven month police hunt, Detective Sergeant Will Loughrin said.
"What was particularly callous about this incident was that it occurred in broad daylight, shortly before midday, when the man approached the woman asking for the time and then followed her before making his attack," he said.
"He then tried to thwart a member of the public who came to the victim's aid by telling her that the victim was his ex-partner and it was a domestic incident but the passer-by persisted and the offender fled when she went to call Police and we can't speak highly enough of the value of this person's intervention."
