An Auckland man has been arrested after an attempted arson attack on a police station early this morning.
The man threw molotov cocktails into the Papakura police compound at 1am, the home-made explosives narrowly missing police vehicles and the building.
Officers ran outside to extinguish the flames and then arrested the man after a short scuffle.
Senior Sergeant Andrew Judson said there was no damage to the building or patrol cars, but only because staff acted so quickly.
"It was good luck rather than bad management. His motivation was definitely to do damage."
The man was taken into custody because of an outstanding arrest warrant.
Mr Judson said the man was currently being interviewed and would appear in Papakura District Court later today.
Charges are expected to include assault offences against the police officers.
