A man accused of trying to shoot ducks in a residential neighbourhood was arrested after gunshots were heard today.
The 27-year-old man was arrested this evening on the outskirts of Porirua, north of Wellington.
A police spokeswoman confirmed a resident called cops after hearing gunshots fired in wetlands beside Pauatahanui Inlet, an arm of Porirua Harbour.
Police blocked off Grays Rd before finding the man and arresting him at about 5:45pm. The area, between Camborne and Pauatahanui, is home to several lifestyle blocks
It was yet to be confirmed if or when charges would be laid.
Hunting season varies according to species and region but in Wellington grey and shoveler ducks may be hunted until June 15, according to Fish and Game's hunting guide. The paradise shelduck season ends there on July 13. Cock pheasant and pukeko can be hunted until August 31.
