The driver, a 24-year-old woman from Cromwell, had failed to negotiate a bend in the road and collided with a roadside barrier, police said.
She was processed for driving with excess breath alcohol and was likely to face dangerous driving charges, police said.
"The investigation into the crash continues but Police would like at this time to acknowledge the excellent work from the attending Ambulance and NZFS staff," police said.
In a separate incident this morning, a person has died after a crash between a car and a truck carrying a house in Northland.
The incident occurred on State Highway 10 about 1km north of Pakaraka at 2am, police said.
Road diversions are in place and State Highway 10 is closed.
Traffic is being diverted onto State Highway 1, Old Bay Rd and Te Ahu Ahu Rd.
The Police Serious Crash investigation unit is at the scene.
No further details have been released.
