KEY POINTS:
A standoff between the Armed Offenders Squad and a man armed with a large hunting knife has ended on the outskirts of Paeroa.
Police had been negotiating with the man , forcing the closure of State Highway 26 near the intersection with Ryall Road on the outskirts of the Thames Valley town.
Police were called to the rural address just before 4pm by a woman who had been assaulted by her emotionally disturbed son, Inspector Ian Brooker said.
She had received a moderate head wound and had locked herself in a bedroom.
The man armed himself with a large hunting knife and refused to speak to police.
The woman remained on the phone with a police call taker until she was able to make her way safely from the house shortly after AOS members arrived.
She was taken for treatment at a medical centre.
Police negotiators spoke to the man until he was eventually taken into custody at 6.30pm.
