KEY POINTS:
An "irrational and aggressive" Northland man, armed with an axe and large knife, was arrested after a stand-off with the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) today.
Police said the man barricaded himself in a house at Hikurangi, 15km north of Whangarei, following a domestic disturbance.
Whangarei police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said when police arrived the family had left the house, but the man confronted police with an axe and a large knife. Police backed off and the AOS was called out.
The man barricaded himself in the house while police spent more than an hour trying to negotiate with him and the street was blocked off.
After police failed to get any response, the AOS put tear gas into the house, flushing out the man who was disarmed.
Ms Kennett said a 40-year-old man would face, yet to be decided, charges.
