The man charged by police investigating a fatal hit-and-run in Auckland can be named for the first time.
Sitanilei Vailahi Haufano, 24, appeared briefly in the Auckland District Court today on a charge of assault after 30-year-old Avondale resident Uilisuni Ofa, 30, was hit and killed by a car on Great South Rd about 1.20am on Wednesday.
It is understood police are considering further charges.
Judge David Harvey declined Haufano's application for bail.
Speaking outside court, Haufano's lawyer John Kovacevich said the name suppression application was only so he could inform Haufano's father of the charge.
